Understanding Pot (and Plant) Sizes

Picking the right size pot for your plant

Daily, we get questions about how to measure plant pot sizes for a new plant. Understanding pot (and plant) sizes can be tricky and confusing, especially for those just starting out. This blog is designed to help answer your questions and clear up any confusion so you are confident in your choice of the perfect pot to match your new plant. The plant specialist at Green can help you throughout the process, don't hesitate to ask for assistance.

How pots are typically sized and measured:

Pots and planters are measured by the opening at the top of the pot rim. The sizes range in inches, from a very small 2.5" pot, all the way up to an extra large 12" and 15" pot.  The most important point to keep in mind when picking the size of your pot is that it should be large enough to accommodate your plant and additional potting soil to allow for additional soil around the root ball. Most plant gurus recommend purchasing a pot about 2" larger than the size of the plant you are purchasing or replanting. For example, a 4" plant in a nursery container would be paired with a 6" pot to provide enough space for additional soil and for future growth.

Here is an explainer to help you understand and visualize how pots are sized:

Pick a quality pot with drainage for a healthy plant.

We recommend purchasing pots with drainage holes manufactured in the pot and sold with a matching saucer to catch excess water. We carry a range of option and we are fans of the Gemstone Cylinder from Momma Pots, available in a range of pastel  and jewel tone colors.

If you purchase a plant and a pot online, purchase a pot that is 1-2" larger than the plant you are purchasing. An added benefit is when you purchase both, we will plant your new plant in your pot, at no charge. Then, you can have us deliver it to your door.

What about plant sizes?

Plants sold in retail stores are typically grown in greenhouses or nurseries and are shipped or delivered in a variety of sizes, usually determined by the size of their container—most often a plastic nursery pot. These containers generally range from 2” to 15” and larger. For houseplants, common sizes include 2” (very small/petite), 3”, 4”, 6” (medium), 8”, 10” (large), 12”, and 15” (extra large).

As a general guide, 4” and 6” plants are perfect for placing on countertops, tables, or grouped with larger plants. An 8” or 10” plant is typically large enough to be displayed on the floor, or in San Diego, on an outdoor patio or seating area. Plants in 12” and 15” pots are considered extra-large and need ample space indoors to thrive without feeling cramped.

While some people choose to keep plants in their nursery containers, it’s generally better to repot them into ceramic or stone pots with proper drainage. When purchasing a new plant, consider picking out a stylish pot to go with it. Not only will your plant thank you, but the combination will add a fresh, vibrant touch to your space, improve air quality, and bring a bit of the outdoors inside, making your home even more livable.”
