Five Free Romantic San Diego Date Ideas

Romance on a Budget - Tips For Saving On Your San Diego Date

Romance can be hard on a budget, but there are alternatives to an expensive dinner for your date. To help the budget-constrained romantic out, we have compiled five free romantic San Diego date ideas that can be fun and deliver an experience that you and your date will remember.  So, save your money by ditching the expensive restaurants and pick up some flowers, cheese, fruit, baguettes, and wine (now that’s romantic) and take in one of our San Diego adventures. But whatever plans you make, you need to get some fresh, high-quality flowers! You don't want to go the budget route when it comes to showing you care.

We think these eight free romantic San Diego adventures offer alternatives to the otherwise expensive night out at a restaurant with someone you love. Plus, they carry a sense of romance, discovery, and adventure that put the traditional dinner option to shame. We guarantee you will receive praise and enthusiasm for your creativity for choosing one of these free or low-cost options. Enjoy the savings.

Balboa Park at Night

This 1200-acre urban oasis is home to the majority of San Diego’s cultural institutions including the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Natural History Museum and the Fleet Science Center. While a visit at nighttime will leave you without access to the various museums, a stroll through the park after dark is romantic and visually stunning. The park is safe, well-lit and showcases the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with the projection of colored lighting on the museum facades that help create a romantic mood in the park after dark.

Built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, Balboa Park is larger than New York City’s Central Park but equally romantic for an evening adventure. While El Prado is the “downtown” walking strip of the Park, side trips to the Alcazar Garden to enjoy the fountains and a short walk to the Organ Pavilion are worth your time. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the cafe located inside the SDMA sculpture garden known as Panama 66 which is open late into the evening. Panama 66 offers an affordable chance to grab a craft beer or glass of wine and take in some contemporary sculpture. For all these reasons, Balboa Park tops our list of free adventures to do with your special someone in San Diego. (don't forget the flowers!)

Black’s Beach View @ Torrey Pines Glider Port

This option is a bit more limited depending on the time that you visit. The Torrey Pines Glider Port sits above the beautiful nudist-friendly Black’s Beach and is located just north of La Jolla at Torrey Pines. At night, with a full moon, the view from the Glider Port parking lot is spectacular, day or night, and offers insight into the mystique and draw of La Jolla to surfers and scientists alike. (If given the opportunity, don’t hesitate to visit the Salk Institute which sits adjacent to the Torrey Pines Glider Port. The two main buildings of the Institute, designed by Louis Kahn in collaboration with Jonas Salk, the discoverer of the first, safe, effective polio vaccine, are considered a masterwork of architecture. Seeing this stunning campus, which remains a working world-renowned basic science research institute, is worth a trip on its own.)

While this adventure at night is limited to views from the Torrey Pines cliffs and sneaking a kiss in the front seat of your car, it is a trip worthy of your time and one you will remember.

Coronado Beach Walk/Hotel Del Coronado

It is hard to overstate the beauty, and romantic mood created by the moon shining on the Hotel Del Coronado and a walk along the Coronado Beach ranked as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Aside from the historical elements, the red-roofed giant that makes up the central part of the hotel is an architectural landmark. Depending on the time, the Hotel Del Coronado provides excellent food and drink service on the deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the beach. Lovers far and wide come to see this beauty and stroll along the beach as the moon lights up the crashing surf. We can guarantee you won’t forget it anytime soon.

La Jolla Children’s Pool

At night, the La Jolla Children’s Pool at La Jolla Cove is a much quieter and romantic experience than the tourist mecca it is during the daytime. Located on the waterfront in downtown La Jolla, this iconic and loved destination is home to harbor seals from far and wide. From December 15 through March 15 is the pupping season, so access to the Children’s Pool beach is restricted. But the view of the seals is excellent from the cliffs above the Children's Pool. After you have taken in the activity of the seals, walk over to the grassy waterfront park to the north and enjoy the sounds, sights, and greater intimacy of the small park overlooking the La Jolla Cove. The biggest challenge with this option is parking which can be limited depending on the time of day (or night).

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is located west of Ocean Beach in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. A destination for the ocean views and surfers catching waves, Sunset Cliffs offers a romantic perch above the Pacific Ocean at sunset and early evening. Be safe and stay back from the eroding cliffs and you will revel in the expansive view of the ocean and waves crashing against the cliffs. Seating is limited (most people sit on the ground) as is parking so you may need to walk a bit to the cliffs, but it is worth it. Take a seat and absorb mother nature in her most authentic way. Afterward, you can drive down to Ocean Beach and take a stroll along Newport Avenue and walk out onto the Ocean Beach Pier for a different point of view. It is a quintessential San Diego experience with surfers, the beach, the bright moonlight and the smell of the ocean all mixing to create a unique experience for you and your date. Give it a try.

These five options can help you save money and deliver on a fun, romantic date. If we can help you with your flower decision (or what flower to choose to send the right message), we welcome the opportunity.
